David Cuna is a compassionate psychotherapist who overcame significant adversity in his early life to achieve his educational and career goals. Born and raised in the remote village of Cuximane in Maquela do Zombo, Angola, he grew up without access to electricity, clean water, or formal schooling beyond the 4th grade. Determined to continue his education, at a young age, Mr. Cuna had to walk over 100 miles barefoot from his home village to attend a boarding school, making the arduous journey each semester to visit his family during breaks. Despite growing up in poverty with parents without formal education, Mr. Cuna remained dedicated to pursuing higher education. With support from friends, teachers, and other benefactors, he persevered. At age 15, he left Angola to study in Cuba, earning a bachelor’s degree in special education. He then relocated to the United States, obtaining a master’s in social work from Simmons University. Mr. Cuna completed his doctorate in social work at Simmons University this year. As someone who has directly benefited from the generosity of others, he is now giving back through his private clinical practice, Cuna Wellness Center. This platform allows him to assist others in improving their quality of life and reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness. Mr. Cuna's remarkable journey and unwavering commitment to community service are genuine and should inspire future generations.
